Cox Plate

Named after William Samuel Cox, the founder of Moonee Valley Racing Club, the Cox Plate was first run in 1922. The race quickly established itself as the ultimate test of a middle-distance horse in Australia, with the unique Moonee Valley track adding an extra dimension to the challenge.

The tight turns and relatively short straight demand horses who can race on the pace and sustain their run. This has produced some of the greatest performances in Australian racing history. Winx's four consecutive victories from 2015-2018 stand as one of sport's greatest achievements.

Other champions to grace the Cox Plate winner's circle include Kingston Town (3 wins), Phar Lap, Tulloch, and So You Think (2 wins). International horses have also targeted the race, with Irish mare Adelaide winning in 2014.

The Cox Plate being a weight-for-age race means horses carry set weights based on age and sex, with no handicapping. This typically results in a smaller, higher quality field than the Melbourne Cup, often making the betting more straightforward.

Win and Each-Way bets are most popular, with the small fields (usually 10-14 runners) making exotic bets more achievable. Place betting pays for top 3 finishes in fields of 8+ runners.
